Strep throat is a bacterial infection that affects the back of the throat and tonsils, causing inflammation and swelling as well as a painful throat that makes swallowing difficult. The lymph nodes in your patient's neck may expand and become uncomfortable to the touch, and his or her throat and tonsils may acquire white or yellow spots or a coating.
