Welcome back to the TIB Pharmacy blog! In our recent post, we looked some of the best ways to beat stomach issues during the holiday season. Because people eat incredibly rich foods and indulge in various sweets, adult beverages, and other treats during this time, their bellies tend to suffer as a result. We would like to continue focusing on digestion in today’s blog post by looking at the best over-the-counter (OTC) medications that can help alleviate a variety of holiday stomach ailments, including heartburn, bloating, stomach aches, and more. Please continue reading below to learn more.

Calm Heartburn

Heartburn is an uncomfortable burning sensation in the chest (usually below the breastbone or ribs), lower neck, and throat that is caused by stomach acid entering the esophagus. Heartburn symptoms generally occur after eating certain foods that are rich, spicy, salty, and acidic, or drinking beverages that trigger acid reflux. Unhealthy eating habits are a major contributor to heartburn which is caused by foods and beverages including (but not limited to):

  • Garlic, onion, and peppers
  • Tomatoes
  • Citrus fruits and beverages such as orange juice
  • Caffeinated drinks like coffee
  • Alcohol

OTC products that contain esomeprazole magnesium that reduce acid like Nexium and Prilosec OTC can relieve heartburn symptoms. For those with chronic heartburn, it’s best to talk with your pharmacist and/or physician to get on a prescription medication to manage this condition.

Ease Bloating

As we mentioned in our last post, belly bloat is especially common during the holidays when people tend to overeat and consume a lot of rich and starchy foods and carbonated beverages. OTC anti-gas remedies like Imodium, Gas-X, and Beano contain Simethicone, an anti-foaming agent which helps to alleviate built up air and gas around the abdomen. Pick up one of these helpful remedies to have handy during the holidays.

Alleviate Nausea and Vomiting

Whether caused by overeating, eating too rich of foods, or eating meats that aren’t fully cooked or foods that have gone bad, nausea and vomiting will surely spoil your holiday fun. These common digestive conditions are the body’s way of dispelling poisonous foods or too much food in the gut. OTC antiemetics are the best way to alleviate nausea and vomiting. The best way to treat nausea and vomiting after eating is with Emetrol, Pepto-Bismol, or Alka-Seltzer. If you have gotten food poisoning, however, you’ll want to let the body do its thing, and contact your pharmacist or physician if symptoms don’t improve. Charcoal pills and Pepto will provide some relief for nausea as a result of food poisoning.
